Hey, listen now, and we’ll tell you how we strive to survive in this life.
Hey, listen now, and we’ll you how, the Roma tribe tries to get by.
I was walking down the street and something caught my eye,
Or my ear, rather, it was a little guy,
Who was singing like an angel that fell from the sky,
But people paid no mind, they walked right by,
He’s an orphan, you see, yeah, he looks like a bum,
Lived his whole life in the worst of slums,
He looks at me and says “My life’s pretty glum,”
“And I don’t even know what tribe I’m from.”
You see, he never fit in his entire life,
His best friend is music, it helps relieve the strife,
The loneliness and poverty cut like a knife,
So he sings to forget, to make it through the night.
Hey, listen now, and we’ll tell you how we strive to survive in this life.
Hey, listen now, and we’ll you how, the Roma tribe tries to get by.
Walking through the big city is so lonely,
But there’re people as far as the eye can see,
I can’t help but believe that there’s no place for me,
We’re misfits everywhere, and that’s how it’s going to be,
Because my people don’t have a nation,
We don’t have a place in civilization,
They call us Indians, and in translation,
They mean to say we don’t belong in this location.
Everyone stares at me when I walk into a cafe,
The fear starts to eat my courage away,
I sit to the side, hurry up and pay,
Leave a tip on the tray and go on my way.
Hey, listen now, and we’ll tell you how we strive to survive in this life.
Hey, listen now, and we’ll you how, the Roma tribe tries to get by.
Sometimes when I’m in a group of people,
I just don’t feel like I’m their equal,
The emptiness is in me as if I were alone,
As if I were a long, long way from my home,
It doesn’t matter if I’m in my hometown,
I don’t belong in any crowd,
Living my life I feel so isolated,
I don’t deserve a life that’s so complicated.
But I know you’re a part of the Roma tribe,
Scattered all around the world, struggling to get by,
We will survive, and one day we’ll be free,
And we will live together in harmony.
